People VALE Betty Johnson AO (1926 -2018)
Fri 01, Jun 2018
The staff and Board members of Health Consumers NSW extend our deep condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the amazing Betty Johnson AO, who passed away on 28 May 2018.
Betty was an outstanding advocate for patients’ rights and involvement. She was instrumental in getting our organisation, Health Consumers NSW, off the ground and running and was Co-Chair from the beginning. She went on to chair our Board from May 2012 until October 2016.
We think of Betty as a trailblazer for creating a better, fairer and kinder world for patients, carers and their families in NSW. Betty worked with numerous organisations and people, at a local, state, national, and global level, to make the world a better place, especially for health consumers, women and older people.
She was a representative for older women at the 4th UN World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, a health consumer representative on the Safety and Quality Council (before it became the commission) and a very active consumer advocate at Northern Sydney Local Health District and Sydney North Primary Health Network, to just name a few.
Betty’s work was acknowledged in 2000 when she was awarded the Office of the Order of Australia (AO) “for service to the community as a consumer advocate in the areas of aged care and related health issues”.
We will remember Betty as a brave and kind person with a penchant for a nice cup of tea, as well as the remarkable superpower who got things done. We will continue the work she started under her favourite catchcry: Nothing about us, without us!
Betty leaves a great legacy and will be missed by many,
The first Betty Johnson AO award in partnership with Sydney North Primary Health Network, Northern Sydney Local Health District, and Health Consumers NSW took place in October last year. Health Consumers NSW is working on a yearly remembrance event for Betty.
