People VALE Allison Kokany
Fri 01, Jun 2018
The staff and Board members of Health Consumers NSW extend our deep condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the remarkable Allison (Ally) Kokany, who passed away on 27 May 2018.
Allison was a long-time health consumer advocate who spent decades working to achieve a fairer and kinder world for people who live with mental illness.
She was also part of the group of sassy and caring community members who decided it was about time that NSW should have their own peak health consumer organisation in late 2010.
In that capacity, she helped create Health Consumers NSW and served as Deputy Chair of our Board from late 2010 to 2013, making sure patients, carers and their families have a voice.
Ally played a vital role as the consumer representative working with our Consumer Engagement Manager, Serena Joyner, at WentWest in the development of the Health Consumers NSW / WentWest Consumer and Community Engagement Model.
We will remember Ally as a courageous and funny person who would call a spade a spade but was able to walk the fine line to tell a confronting truth with the required dose of gentleness.
Ally leaves a great legacy and will be missed by many,
WentWest Primary Health Network has announced they will establish the Allison Kokany Scholarship to support people with lived experience to carry on Allison’s important work. Further details of the scholarship should be available on the WestWest website in coming weeks.
