Tools to help you gather data
If you want to advocate on behalf of your community or condition you will need to gather relevant data. We have collected several online sources of that data for you:
Collecting information about the problem – This web resource from the very comprehensive Community Tool Box (University of Kansas) talks about why you might collect information, how to go about collecting data and what the limitations of the data might be. Assessing Community Needs and Resources | Collecting Information About the Problem
Statistical community profiles – The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides Community Profiles, a comprehensive statistical picture of an area in spreadsheet format, providing characteristics relating to people, families and dwellings. They cover most topics on the Census form: Community Profiles
More statistical community profiles – A website that provides demographic analysis for Australian cities and suburbs based on results from the 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 Censuses of Population and Housing. The profile is updated with population estimates when the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) releases new figures: Community profile | Australia | profile.id
Australian health and health system data – The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare provides a wide range of data and analysis on Australians and their health system. Information is available as reports and bulletins and can be downloaded in spreadsheet format: Data and information from the AIHW
Health data in an App – The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has produced several smart phone apps that summarise key information about Australians and their health. The OzHealth app is a condensed version of the thirteenth biennial health report of the AIHW. It is the most comprehensive and authoritative source of national statistics and information on the health of all Australians. The OzHealth App
Public health data tools – The Australian Public Health Information Development Unit provides information and data tools on a broad range of health and other factors that affect the Australian population. For example, The Map Your Own Data Tool enables you to produce maps using your own data for three Australian geographical areas – Postcodes, Statistical Local Areas or Local Government Areas.
The Centre of cultural diversity and research has provided this collection of resources and data sources for gathering data on diversity: Census Data, Research & Reports
