Recognising the value of expert contributions made by people with lived or living experience
Health Consumers NSW welcomes the NSW Health Consumer, Carer and community members’ remuneration guideline, published in April 2023.
Paid participation recognises the value of the expert contributions made by people who have a lived or living experience of being a health consumer.
As part of our ongoing commitment to health consumers in NSW, HCNSW conducted a survey to understand the viewpoints of health consumers on remuneration. A total of 175 responses were received from both metro and regional/rural areas, which helped to shape a discussion with consumers at our webinar on 19th July.
Topics raised at the consumer discussion included:
- what recognition means to consumers
- supporting diversity
- reducing power differentials
- remuneration options available to consumers
- the criteria of what constitutes engagement
- the effect of remuneration on the perception of consumers and their independence
- management and implementation of the NSW Health guideline
- tax or Centrelink implications
We followed this with a remuneration information session on the 24th July. Our panel included:
- Glen Charlesworth – Program Manager, Elevating the Human Experience at NSW Ministry of Health
- Jennifer Coote – Community Engagement Lead, Western NSW Local Health District
- Harry Iles-Mann – Health Consumer Leader, Lived Experience and Health Strategy Consultant
We thank our panel and the attendees for their time and insight. This session was recorded and can be found on our Mighty Networks page here. You can also continue any discussions here with other consumers.
A report on these findings will be available soon and we are working on providing more webinars sessions on this topic in the near future.
