Doctor of Medicine (MD) Curriculum Development

We are pleased to announce that the Sydney Medical School (SMS), University of Sydney, is recruiting additional members to their Consumer Engagement Advisory Group. The Consumer Engagement Advisory Group advises on consumer issues for the Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program (what is taught to medical students).
Application for membership of the SMS Consumer Engagement Advisory Group is now open.
The Community Engagement Advisory Group will provide the school with advice on:
- The MD program including potential community stakeholder involvement in teaching and learning activities relevant to the community it serves
- The skills, knowledge and attributes required by the medical graduates who complete the MD
- Facilitation of partnership opportunities in education where appropriate.
- Other matters, including research partnerships, as appropriate and requested by the Head of School and Dean of SMS.
Membership
The SMS Consumer Engagement Advisory Group will consist of at least six health consumer representatives. People will be appointed to the group as an individual and not as a representative of any organisation.
We are looking for people who have:
- experience of using health services, as patients, carers or family members
- experience of being a consumer, patient or carer representative with universities, health services or other relevant organisations
- formal or informal connections with existing health consumer, carer, community or other relevant organisations and communities.
We are seeking people with recent lived experience of using health services. Representation may include, but not be limited to, people with lived experience of:
- chronic illness (such as asthma, diabetes, COPD, arthritis)
- mental health
- cancer
- specific services – such as palliative care and/or end-of-life care
Diversity and equity including gender in the composition of the Group will be a consideration. We would also like to hear from people from groups who have specific health needs and experiences of health care, such as:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities
- Young People
- Older People
- People with a Disability
- People from LGBTIQA+
- People from metropolitan, rural and remote communities.
Sitting Fees
Members of the Consumer Engagement Advisory Group will be reimbursed in line with HCNSW’s recommendations for remuneration and reimbursement of health consumers.
Meetings
The Consumer Engagement Advisory Group meets 3 or 4 times a year. Most meetings are held virtually, with face-to-face meetings held at the Camperdown Campus of the University of Sydney. The next meeting of the group is scheduled for 14 December 2022.
