Health consumer representative training 2021
Online training – five intakes this year!
Our online consumer representative training teaches the same content as our face-to-face course, optimised for an online training experience.
It provides education, support and networking opportunities for new and experienced health consumers engaged in advocacy and representative roles within health services. Learn about the concepts and practises of consumer engagement in the NSW health system.
2021 teaching periods
Teaching period 1: 22 February – 26 March
Teaching period 2: 17 May – 18 June
Teaching period 3: 12 July – 13 August
Teaching period 4: 13 September – 15 October
Teaching period 5: 1 November – 3 December
Who is this course for?
It is for health consumer representatives engaged with NSW Local Health Districts, Primary Health Networks, public or private hospitals and health-related NGOs. Currently, online training is the only health consumer representative training we offer to mixed groups due to the COVID-19 pandemic (as of November 2020). It is also convenient for health consumer representatives who cannot attend our face-to-face classes due to travel-distance or health-related issues.
How does it work?
Participants have five weeks online access to a private training group on our online engagement and training site Amplify. During that time, they complete five online modules, which involve some reading, answering questions online, and participating in online chat forums.
Participants also have three Zoom-live-classes during weeks 1, 3 and 5. During these, participants have the opportunity to chat with their fellow classmates, do some workshop activities, and ask any questions they may have or discuss issues they want to raise with the group, or with our Training Manager, Emma.
The approximate time commitment to finish the course: 8-12 hours
What do I need?
Participants need access to a computer/device with a reliable internet connection, functioning webcam and speakers. Participants can choose to print out extra course and study materials themselves or, where this is not possible, we can send hardcopy materials via post.
$330 (including GST)
Note: If you are an existing health consumer representative with a Local Health District, Primary Health Network, hospital or similar organisation, your organisation should pay for you to attend this training. If you are not associated with an organisation, please contact us to discuss payment options.

Please note: We know that online training isn’t for every health consumer representative and patient advocate and our Board and staff are continuously monitoring the situation with the aim to provide face-to-face training for mixed groups later in 2021 again.
As of November 2020, we are able to provide face-to-face health consumer representative training to small staff groups of the same organisation at the organisation’s premises. If you are interested in this, please contact Emma Collins at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your training and pricing.
Use the form below to register yourself (health consumers) or your organisation’s health consumer representatives (health services staff) for one of our upcoming online teaching periods.
State clearly who is paying for the training (usually the health organisation working with the consumer representative) and let us know if you have any special requirements.
